Man Threatens to Kill ‘Usurper’ Obama, Calls It ‘Constitutional Duty’

A man in Wisconsin has been arrested and charged with threatening to kill the president, something he says was his “constitutional duty” because Obama is a “usurper.” In other words, he took his inspiration pretty much word for word from right-wing anti-Obama rhetoric.

A Wisconsin man is in custody for threatening to kill President Barack Obama after allegedly telling a security guard at a La Crosse library, “the usurper is here and if I get a chance I’ll take him out and I’ll take the shot.”

Brian D. Dutcher, 55, of Tomah, was taken into custody after confirming his threat to the Secret Service, KTLA reports.

According to the warrant for his arrest, Dutcher also posted a threat against the president on Facebook on June 30, reading, “that’s it! Thursday I will be in La Crosse. Hopefully I will get a clear shot at the pretend president. Killing him is our CONSTITUTIONAL DUTY!”

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? It’s precisely position taken by the far right in this country from the moment Obama took office. They have denied Obama’s eligibility to be president, on simply ridiculous grounds, thus he is a “usurper” and the elections were irrelevant. And he’s trying to destroy the Constitution, he’s God’s punishment on America, he’s a communist and a Muslim, or at least a Muslim sympathizer, who is deliberately trying to destroy the country.

If those things were true, it would be a perfectly reasonable response to take him out, at least to those whose brains are pickled in conspiracy theories on a daily basis. I’m not the least bit shocked that the man would do this. I’m frankly shocked that it hasn’t happened more often (though given the huge increase in credible threats on the president since Obama took office, maybe it has and we just don’t have such clear statements from would-be killers).
